Troop 551 usually goes camping about once a month. These trips range from weekend outings in the nearby area to week-long summer camp and high adventure excursions. For our weekend trips, we typically leave Friday evening and return Sunday morning. Exact details are given out in the weeks leading up to the trip. Camping trips are a great way for Scouts to demonstrate the skills that they've learned, like knot-tying, cleaning dishes, and outdoor etiquette.

What You Need to Bring
Troop 551 has a lot of materials for scouts to use, like extra tents, cooking supplies and propane lanterns. However, Scouts are responsible for packing what they need for camping trips. You can print or download a list here
First Aid
Troop 551 has the equipment needed to handle an emergency, but Scouts are highly encouraged to pack a personal first aid kit with enough supplies for 1-2 people. This kit can be handy to have at any Scouting event. You can print or download a list here
Clothing
Proper clothing is a must for any Scouting activity. Appropriate clothing varies depending on the weather forecast, location, events, and duration of a camping trip. When packing for an outing, use your best judgement to determine the type and amount of clothing to bring. You can also refer to your Scout Handbook for the type of gear to wear in certain scenarios. Unless instructed otherwise, you should always bring your Class A and Class B uniforms with you.
In addition to proper clothing, Scouts should always wear proper footwear. On most camping trips, and whenever your Class A uniform is required, you should wear warm, water repellent boots. Boots like this will provide support for your ankle, and keep your feet warm and dry. Socks are also part of proper footwear and are super important in keeping your feet healthy. At most outdoor events, Scouts should wear either wool or wool blend socks as opposed to cotton, which traps moisture and can keep feet cold and damp. Information about the right kind of footwear for different types of activities can be found in the Scout Handbook.
